The Athletic’s chief transfer reporter David Ornstein has been speaking on Premier League interest coming in for winger Nico Williams this month.

A move still does seem unlikely for this month, but at the moment and how this window has gone so far in terms of mad transfer rumours, you can never write anything off right now.

EXCLUSIVE! Chelsea eyeing move for 22-year-old PSG player!!

January is usually a very quiet month because clubs are reluctant to sell players halfway through a season, but I guess financial issues at some clubs, and then trying to stick to PSR rules, will be forcing some clubs to be more willing to sell some of their assets even midway through a season.

Chelsea are also in the news a lot this week, and it looks like they could be doing more business than we expected at the start of January.

We have seen some crazy Chelsea links already this week, including a potential move to sign Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo THIS MONTH! And some serious interest coming in from The Blues to bring back a former defender in the shape of Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, although that one seems hard to get done.

Ornstein on Williams

Chelsea still keen on Williams

Chelsea were linked heavily to Williams in the summer, but no deal happened because the overall package of any deal would be too expensive. And it looks like that is still the case, according to Ornstein.

In words cited on X this week, Ornstein said on The Athletic Podcast:

“Chelsea maintain their interests in Nico Williams, like [Mikel] Arteta and Arsenal. But the package is just shy of €60m at the moment because it fluctuates with inflation, and you have to pay it in full, which is a problem with PSR and cash flow, and then he’s on a really high salary.”
