Levi Colwill has played two years at Chelsea since arriving back at the club from his loan at Brighton, spending the season with Mauricio Pochettino in charge deployed mainly at left back, then switching to regular central defender under Enzo Maresca this year.

It’s a natural path to take for a young player adapting to the Premier League. And the club could be about to repeat the model. At the moment they’re well stocked at centre-back (at least in terms of numbers), but lack a backup for Marc Cucurella at left back.

Hato looks to be Chelsea’s top left sided defender option

If they sign a player capable of playing both, they kill two birds with one stones, and there’s serious talk that Jorrel Hato of Ajax could be that man.

With the Club World Cup wrapped up and plenty of attacking signings made, attention turns to the defence, and right now Hato feels like the man most likely to join. He’s been mentioned since January, but Bobby Vincent’s piece for Football.London makes it clear that he’s coming into focus more and more.

The defender is really well regarded by our sporting directors, and if a deal can be done at a reasonable price, we think they will be all over it. The likely departure of youth star Ishe Samuels-Smith opens the gap for another left sided defender even wider.

Chelsea ready to swoop for Hato once sales get serious

Sales are what Chelsea need now to grease the wheels for a deal like this. There are certainly no shortage of potential outgoings, and once things start moving with the likes of Renato Veiga, Joao Felix, Noni Madueke, Raheem Sterling and Axel Disasi, cash should be flowing in to make a move for Hato a no brainer.
