Chelsea Injury News: Updates on Trevoh Chalobah, Romeo Lavia and Wesley Fofana

With Chelsea preparing for their Premier League opener against Crystal Palace, attention has turned to the club’s growing injury list. Enzo Maresca faces an early test of squad depth, particularly in defence, as several key names battle for fitness.

Chalobah Expected to Recover for Crystal Palace Clash

Trevoh Chalobah gave Chelsea a brief scare during the recent friendly against AC Milan when he left the pitch clutching his ankle after a challenge on Yunus Musah. The 25-year-old appeared in significant discomfort and was immediately assessed by the medical staff.

Post-match, Maresca moved quickly to calm concerns. “[Chalobah] is ok. It was too hot, so he decided to go out,” he said. The defender later joined in the Club World Cup trophy celebrations, underlining the manager’s reassurances. Chalobah is now expected to be available for the visit of Crystal Palace on Sunday 17 August 2025.

Lavia Absence Continues with no Clear Return Date

Romeo Lavia has been missing from the Chelsea squad since completing 85 minutes in the Club World Cup round of 16 victory over Benfica. A ‘small muscle problem’ sustained before the quarter-final against Palmeiras has kept him out of training, and he has not been sighted at Cobham in recent sessions.

The club have yet to confirm the extent of the midfielder’s injury, and with no official timetable, his return remains uncertain. Chelsea supporters will be hoping for positive news soon, particularly with Lavia offering valuable depth in central areas.

Fofana Back in Contention but Minutes will be Managed

Wesley Fofana, whose time at Stamford Bridge has been hampered by repeated injuries, is back in full training after recovering from a thigh issue. Since his move from Leicester City in 2022, the French defender has been limited to just 34 competitive appearances, making his availability a welcome boost.

Maresca confirmed that Fofana is in line to feature against Crystal Palace, saying: “He will be available for Palace. We are very happy because he is an important player.” However, given his history, the club are expected to carefully manage his game time in the opening weeks of the campaign.

Other Defensive Concerns for Maresca

Benoit Badiashile, who sustained a knock during the Club World Cup win over Benfica, has been training individually and is targeting a return against Brentford on 13 September 2025.

Levi Colwill faces the longest absence of all, having undergone surgery on an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in training. The young defender is set to miss most of the 2025-26 season, with a comeback unlikely before spring 2026. Chelsea confirmed in a statement: “Levi will now begin his recovery and be supported by the club’s medical department at Cobham during his rehabilitation phase.”

With the season about to begin, Maresca will be balancing optimism over the returns of Chalobah and Fofana with caution over Lavia’s uncertainty and Colwill’s long-term layoff. The coming weeks could prove decisive in shaping Chelsea’s early form.
