Some people thought the Club World Cup wasn’t going to be a big deal – but yesterday we had a special “transfer deadline day” just for it, and today we’re reporting on the squad selection as headline news. That puts paid to that idea then…
Nizaar Kinsella on Renato Veiga future.
The big news for Chelsea, among other things, is that Djordje Petrovic and Kendry Paez will be left out of the group, set to be announced this evening around 5pm.
But there are also players who will be included, slightly surprisingly. Renato Veiga moved to Juventus on loan in January, and looked like he might move there permanently.
But despite the BBC’s Nizaar Kinsella reporting that the Italian giants were interested in extending the loan to cover the CWC, or to make the deal permanent, it seems the Portugal international will in fact be attending with Chelsea.
Given we currently don’t have a senior left back alternative to Marc Cucurella, this makes some sense. Cucurella had a gruelling and has just capped it off with two competitive games for Spain in the Nations League. He needs as much rest as possible in this tournament.
Although of course we’d rather see the likes of academy player Ishe Samuels Smith given a chance, it’s Veiga who is likely to step up. Even if the plan is to sell him later in the summer, this will be seen as a good chance to boost his value further after some good progress with Juve.
We were already asking for £30m, a strong tournament in the USA could see that rise even further.
We will find out more this evening when the squad is actually out.
