Chelsea’s need to sign a winger this summer has only grown with the news that Jadon Sancho would be sent back to Manchester United, and that Mykhailo Mudryk’s ban looks set to continue.

We all know the main options – Jamie Gittens looks a particular favourite right now. But there’s a good chance that Dortmund hold out for more money than we’re willing to pay, so it’s vital to have other options on the table.

Chelsea add talented Simons to their target list

Xavi Simons playing for RB Leipzig.

One of those names we’ve heard a little about – but could hear more about in the weeks to come – is Xavi Simons. Bobby Vincent mentioned him in a recent Q and A about Chelsea’s potential signings this summer for Football.London:

“As for Xavi Simons, I’ve heard his name mentioned a couple of times this summer as a potential option but nothing absolutely concrete yet. He is someone who has cropped up in the past as well, so there is definite interest there.”

With Nico Williams looking prohibitively expensive, an unlikely bid for Simons is becoming more plausible.

Simons a solid bet for youthful Chelsea

Fabrizio Romano had already hinted that this was a possibility, saying to CaughtOffside earlier in the summer that “England is a destination that is appreciated by Xavi Simons”.

Still just 22, Simons has long been considered a top wonderkid and won’t come cheap. However his wages shouldn’t be too crazy, and if we can get Leipzig to agree to a reasonable fee, we can actually see this one happening. The issue will be the competition – many top clubs have tracked him for a long time, and it won’t be easy to secure him if they all start bidding.

This one is still a long way off, but worth watching if things break down with Gittens.
