Enzo Maresca says he expects Chelsea to sign a winger this summer.
The Blues opted not to take up their option to sign Jadon Sancho on a permanent deal from Manchester United, while Mykhailo Mudryk still remains suspended while the results of his failed drugs test are examined.
It means Chelsea have been left light in the wide areas and Maresca is keen for the club to add to his squad in that position now that the window has reopened.
“Jadon [Sancho] is not with us, so for sure that is a position we need to do something about,” he said.
“We have Noni [Madueke], Pedro [Neto] and [Tyrique George] only as the proper wingers, so something for sure is going to happen. When the transfer window is open, for sure, we can do something.”
Chelsea tried to sign England youngster Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund during the earlier mini transfer window before the start of the Club World Cup, but were unable to get a deal over the line before the deadline.
They are likely to revisit that deal, however, with Gittens also having travelled to the Club World Cup in the USA with his current club Dortmund.
Chelsea have also been linked with signing a new goalkeeper this summer, and have held talks over a move for AC Milan shot stopper Mike Maignan.
“The situation about the goalkeepers is quite easy for me, quite simple,” Maresca said.
“Robert is the number one, then we have Filip that is the number two. Penders joined us, we are going to see [him] in the next weeks. We have time to analyse and to judge him. Then we are going to take a final decision.
“Then for Maignan or different players, I don’t think it’s worth talking about them.”
Chelsea have so far signed midfielder Dario Essugo, defender Mamadou Sarr and striker Liam Delap this summer. Estevao and Kendry Paez have also joined officially having previously agreed moves to west London.
Delap could make his debut for the club when they take on LAFC in their opening game of the Club World Cup in Atlanta.
