Ben Chilwell is set to undergo a medical at Crystal Palace today ahead of his loan move to the club from Chelsea.
Chilwell has been frozen out at Chelsea this season with new head coach Enzo Maresca having informed the defender he does not feature in his plans. The 28-year-old has featured for just 45 minutes in the League Cup.
Palace are now nearing an agreement to sign the England international on loan. Chelsea have approved the deal, which could be finalised before the 11pm deadline for business for Premier League clubs.
Chilwell’s loan move to Palace will continue a strong working relationship between the clubs. Palace have signed Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah on loan from their London rivals in recent campaigns.
Speaking on Friday, Palace boss Oliver Glasner said the club were determined to add to their defensive stocks. Palace’s options have been depleted following Chalobah’s recall to Chelsea and Chadi Riad’s season-ending injury.
“We have one, with Romain Esse, and we are still working on the second one. Monday the window closes, and I am pretty confident that we will get this deal done.
“It started this week that we said we have to look [in defence] because in the centre we have five positions and we have just three [players] at the moment.
“We said we will look for a centre-back. But we will just do something that makes sense for us.
“It’s not that we need it immediately, because Adam [Wharton] coming back means Jeff Lerma can play with Nathaniel Clyne, who did excellently at the end of last season. We have several options in the team.
“But we are looking. If there is a good opportunity, we will try to do it. If not, we trust in all our players like we always do. Let’s say ideally two signings, but at least one.”
