Axel Disasi is walking a funny path at Chelsea.

It feels on the one hand like he’s pretty close to being bundled out of the club and considered a bad player and a bad signing. Yet at times last year his all action style got the crowd going, and it felt like he could even be on the way to being a bit of a cult hero, if things broke his way.

It’s only got tougher for him since then, however. Wesley Fofana is back fit and is partnering Levi Colwill in the middle of defence. Even worse, Disasi is being farmed out to the right hand side of defence in the Europa Conference league to a hybrid position he’s really not comfortable in.

Disasi’s winding road to the top

As always with football players, it’s important to remember the immense challenges they face on the journey to the top.

It’s easy to call them a donkey when they make a mistake – but they’re the very thind end of a pyramid consisting of literally millions of people playing football all over the world. Disasi’s story of his rise to the top, as featured on the Chelsea website, is an inspirational one of a man who reached the top by an unusual route in the modern game.

In the end though, he very generously credits all his success mainly to those around him:

“It’s a mixture of work, confidence, and the people around me,’ he replies. ‘My friends and family are good people. When the times were bad, they were there for me. When the times were good, they were also there for me. They kept me on a good balance. They never let me think I was on top of the world.”
