Chelsea lifted the Barclays Women’s Super League trophy at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, after a late Aggie Beever-Jones goal against Liverpool completed an unbeaten league campaign for Sonia Bompastor’s side.

Both sides forced a plethora of chances throughout the match, but with the game still goalless when six minutes of stoppage time were announced, it was Beever-Jones’ mazy run on the right flank that provided the Blues with the decisive goal on the day.

As it happened

With their league title already confirmed and needing just a draw to confirm their unbeaten campaign in the WSL, Chelsea looked lively as they forced the first chance of the match inside the opening 10 minutes when Aggie Beever-Jones ran onto a Keira Walsh through ball. The England forward was beaten by Rachael Laws, though, on that occasion.

It looked to be a squandered chance that could have come back to bite Sonia Bompastor’s side as Liverpool sought to deploy a high press to take control of the match – but the Blues fought against it well, with Sjoeke Nüsken sending in a teasing low cross that somehow evaded a sea of bodies inside the six-yard box.

Sandy Baltimore could have unlocked the Liverpool defence just moments later with a tidy flick, followed by a one-two that looked to allow her to break through the lines until a well-timed tackle from Grace Fisk halted her progress.

Chelsea could have taken the lead just before the break when Beever-Jones teed up Wieke Kaptein on the edge of the penalty area, only for the Dutch midfielder’s low strike to be claimed with ease by the Liverpool goalkeeper.

A draw would have been enough for Chelsea to confirm their unbeaten league season but the Blues continued their search for the lead, and came close to finding it with a rapid counterattack around the hour mark, only for Taylor Hinds to track back well and make a sliding clearance.

But the Blues have become the masters of the late goal this season, and Saturday was no different. When the clock ticked into six minutes of stoppage time, Beever-Jones collected a perfect pass from Ashley Lawrence on the right and wiggled towards goal, ultimately squeezing her effort between Laws and the near post.

Sonia Bompastor had a tough task ahead of her when she succeeded Emma Hayes in the summer. 22 games, 19 wins and three draws later, the former French international looks to have taken to the WSL like a duck to water. Chelsea become the first side to hit the 60-point barrier in a WSL campaign, and the first to go unbeaten in the 22-game era.
