Nottingham Forest have underlined their attacking intentions ahead of the new season after extending Charlie Wellings’ stay on Trentside.
The 27-year-old striker played a key role in securing Forest’s promotion to the Barclays Women’s Super League 2 last season, netting 27 times in all competitions as the club secured the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division title.
Wellings’ goals included a brace in the FA Women’s National League Cup final, where Nottingham Forest held off Stoke City to win the competition for the second time in three seasons.
The striker has signed a new one-year deal.
“I’m delighted to sign a new contract with this ambitious club,” said Wellings, who joined Carly Davies’ side from Reading last summer.
“It was a privilege to be a part of our success last year, and we’re all hungry to push on and prove ourselves at this level. I can’t wait to be back playing at the City Ground in front of our amazing fans.”
Wellings’ continued presence at the business end of the pitch offers further evidence of Davies’ determination to mount a push for the top tier this season.
Her contract extension follows the arrival this week of winger Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, who scored 14 goals for London City Lionesses as they earned promotion to the WSL last season.
“The team had an incredible season last year,” said Boye-Hlorkah. “History is being created here and I’m grateful that I can be a part of continuing to build something special at the club.”
Forest previously played their home fixtures at Long Eaton United’s Grange Park, but will graduate to the City Ground this term as the women’s team embraces full-time professional status.
The feelgood factor on Trentside is unmistakable, and Davies has high hopes that Wellings can maintain her red-hot form this term.
“We are absolutely delighted that Charlie Wellings has signed a new contract with the club,” said the Forest boss.
“Since joining us last July, Charlie has consistently demonstrated her quality, professionalism, and commitment to our collective ambition.
“Her goals and performances have been instrumental in our success last season. I’m looking forward to seeing her continue that and showcase her ability in the WSL2 this season.”
Forest went unbeaten in the league last season, with Wellings voted player of the season by supporters and team-mates alike.
