CHAN 2024: An Algerian referee to blow the opening whistle of the tournament
The opening match of CHAN 2024 will be officiated by a well-known Algerian referee on the continent.
Lotfi Bekouassa has been appointed by CAF to take charge of the tournament's inaugural clash between Tanzania and Burkina Faso, this Saturday, August 2, at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. The 38-year-old Algerian brings a wealth of experience to the pitch. An international referee since 2016, he is renowned for his discipline, composure, and instructive approach—qualities honed through his other profession as a teacher.
He will be assisted by Adel Abane (Algeria) and Wael Hannachi (Tunisia), with Houssam Benyahia rounding out the officiating team as fourth official. In the VAR booth, the technology will be overseen by Lahlou Benbraham (Algeria) and Akhona Makalima (South Africa).
