Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal has highlighted the significance of season openers as his team prepares for their UEFA Champions League clash against Stuttgart.

Carvajal emphasised that the first matches of the season are always crucial and given the new format and the advantage of playing at home, he stressed that the team must approach the game with determination and focus.

“The first matches are always important. With this new format and playing at home we have to go for it. We will try to give the opponent as few chances as possible,” the defender told the press.

When discussing the possibility of winning a seventh Champions League title, Carvajal expressed his ambition and belief in the team’s potential.

“It would be unmatched. I still have a few years left to achieve that goal. Why not,” he admitted.

Carvajal also addressed recent controversies surrounding Vinicius Jr’s goal celebration against Real Sociedad. He mentioned that he was unsure about the specific gesture in question but highlighted that there had been audible insults directed at Vinicius from the stands.

“We see and hear insults directed at him. When they prick him, he bleeds. And it is normal that he responds with certain gestures.”

As captain of both Spain and Real Madrid, Carvajal condemned any form of racist abuse and supported the implementation of stricter measures to prevent such incidents.

“As captain of Spain and Real Madrid, racist insults to Vini or any player must be avoided. If stricter protocols must be made, then go ahead,” he explained.

Open to contract renewal

On the topic of his contract, which runs until 2025, Carvajal expressed his desire to remain with the club for an extended period. He stated that he would like to stay as long as the club values his contributions.

“I would love to stay here for a long time. As long as the club wants to continue with my services, the only thing I demand of myself is to be at the right level.”

Carvajal is committed to maintaining a high level of performance and is prepared to step aside if he feels he is no longer meeting the required standards. “The moment I am not at the right level, I will step aside.”

He acknowledged that Real Madrid typically renew contracts on a year-by-year basis for players of a certain age and has no issues with this approach.

“The club’s conditions are to renew year after year when the players reach a certain age. I have no problem doing it this way… the president is in charge of making the squads,” he admitted.

Regarding his potential inclusion in the Ballon d’Or race, Carvajal reflected on his exceptional season, noting that, statistically and in terms of titles, it was his best year.

“In terms of data and titles, it is one of the best seasons of my career.

“Seeing myself in the Ballon d’Or… why not? I dream about it, but just being there is an honour.”

Carvajal also shared his thoughts on Kylian Mbappe’s Champions League debut at Santiago Bernabeu, suggesting it will be a memorable experience for the French star.

“He has experience in Europe. Tomorrow he will see what it is like to play in the Champions League with Real Madrid at the Bernabéu. He will remember it forever.”

Meanwhile, the return of Jude Bellingham is seen as a significant boost for the team. Carvajal praised Bellingham for his impact both on and off the pitch, recognising his contributions as vital for Real Madrid.

“Jude’s return is fantastic news. We know the level he has and what he contributes with and without the ball. It is a joy for everyone that he is back.”

Finally, Carvajal was asked about the prospect of playing as a centre-back if needed. He mentioned that although Eder Militao is dealing with an injury and has been uncomfortable, he is ready to step into the role if required.

“I think Militao has a knock and he wasn’t comfortable. I already played as a centre-back last season against Atletico de Madrid and Girona. I don’t have any complexes about playing in another position. I’ll be wherever the coach asks me to be,” he concluded.
