Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has earmarked another member of his squad as an option to fill in at centre-back over the weeks ahead.
That’s according to Diario AS, who point towards Ferland Mendy as the player in question.
The situation at the heart of defence in Spain’s capital has of course taken its place front and centre in the headlines over recent weeks.
This comes after the limited options at the disposal of Carlo Ancelotti and his staff were reduced ever further.
Already without all of David Alaba, Joan Martínez and emergency options Dani Carvajal and Aurélien Tchouaméni, Real saw key stopper Éder Militão ruled out for the remainder of the campaign with an ACL tear.
As much means that those overseeing matters at Valdebebas will be forced to get creative with their personnel over the weeks and months ahead.
And, according to AS, one name pushed forward as an option in central defence as a result comes in the form of Ferland Mendy.
This comes owing to the Frenchman’s long-hailed qualities on the defensive side of the ball.
The pecking order in the middle of Real Madrid’s backline for the months ahead, in turn, can now be considered as follows:
Antonio Rüdiger, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Raúl Asencio, Ferland Mendy, and Jesús Vallejo, in that order.
