A consortium led by the former Real Madrid winger is set to find out the fate of their bid soon.

Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan is set to reject an offer to buy the club made by a consortium led by Bluebirds fan Gareth Bale.

The now retired footballer is looking to get back into the sport, but this time via the method of ownership.

Bale, who was initially linked with a prospective takeover of Cardiff's League One rivals Plymouth Argyle by The Telegraph, is leading a group that wants to buy the Welsh capital's premier football team from their current Malaysian owner, as was reported by The Athletic.

Vincent Tan set to make key decision on Gareth Bale takeover offer

Tan is not the most popular figure at the football club.

On top of the recent relegation that he oversaw, he has also pulled off some other stunts that didn't go down with the supporters, like in 2012 when he changed the Bluebirds' home kit from its traditional colour to red.

He has faced pressure to sell for some time, but, despite hopes of Bale, a Cardiff boy, being the one to oust Tan from his position at the helm of the club, supporters are set to be disappointed.

According to Sky Sports, the owner is reportedly going to turn down the consortium's offer.

The 35-year-old recently confirmed that he was interested in buying the club at the premiere of F1: The Movie. "It's a club close to my heart," said the former Real Madrid player to Sky.

"It's where I grew up and I would love to be able to be a part of growing Cardiff and taking it to the Premier League where it belongs."

It was claimed that the offer sent to Tan by the former Wales captain and his party was worth £40 million. However, Sky Sports have reported that it was actually worth £20 million, and they have added that there are offers of a higher value on the table from alternative bidders.

Bale has already assisted in buying one Welsh club post retirement. His former Madrid teammate is now a minority owner of Cardiff's bitter rivals Swansea City.

He was consulted by the Croatian about his potential investment before he made things official with the Swans, but it appears he'll need to try a bit harder to get in on the action for himself.

Gareth Bale would inject some life back into Cardiff City - Vincent Tan is not for budging though

While it is not certain that Bale's consortium will return to the negotiating table with an improved proposal, his public stance on the potential takeover makes it likely that this won't be the only attempt that they make.

The past has shown us that this is a club that can climb to the highest levels of the sport in this country.

Now that they are in League One, and, logically, should be one of the more competitive teams in the division under new boss Brian Barry-Murphy, there is a window of opportunity open to them to build some positive momentum as they look to re-ascend the mountain.

Having Bale in charge of such a fightback would only fuel the fire of the feel-good factor surrounding the club, should they launch a genuine promotion push.
