The Carabao Cup semi-finals have been drawn with holders Liverpool to take on Tottenham Hotspur in the last four.
Liverpool booked their place in the semi-finals with a 2-1 win at Southampton this week and will next face Spurs over two legs. Arne Slot’s side will travel to North London for the first leg before the return at Anfield.
Spurs secured their semi-final spot after a thrilling 4-3 win over Manchester United on Thursday night. Ange Postecoglou’s side are aiming to win their first major trophy since last lifting this competition in 2008.
The other semi-final will see Arsenal face Newcastle. The Gunners will host the first leg, before travelling to St James’ Park for the return. Arsenal could face Spurs in the first-ever North London derby major final if both teams progress from their ties.
For Newcastle, the Magpies are looking to end a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy. Eddie Howe’s side were runners-up in the Carabao Cup in 2023, their first major final since the turn of the millennium.
“I think we were guaranteed a tough game, whoever we got. I watched it with interest last night, I thought the game [Tottenham v Man Utd] was an unbelievable game to watch,” Howe reflected on the draw.
“I think when you get to this stage of the competition, you know the quality is very high. We play Arsenal and we’ve had some good games against them in the last couple of years, so I look forward to that.”
The semi-final first legs will be played in the week commencing January 6th 2025, and the second legs in the week beginning February 3rd. Wembley Stadium will host the final on March 16th.
