Call Miami Match "Humiliating" in Joint Rejection: Ter Stegen Joins Captains in Rejecting La Liga’s Miami Match Proposal
Barcelona goalkeeper Marc Andre ter Stegen's joined fellow La liga captains in rejecting the proposal to stage the league match between Barcelona & Villarreal in Miami on 17 August.
According to Spanish outlet Sport, ter Stegen was among the leaders who signed statement issued by the players union opposing the plan.
Villarreal captain Gerard Moreno also backed the stance showing unity between both clubs ahead of the proposed fixture.
The statement from the players union described the Miami match idea as "humiliating" citing lack of dialogue, respect and transparency from organizers. Captains of all 20 top flight club supported the decision reinforcing collective opposition.
Reports clarified that ter Stegen’s support for the statement's unrelated to his current injury situation or contract future with Barcelona. His decision mirrors that of other captains acting in solidarity rather than for personal reasons.
Players have also demanded clarity on how the match could disrupt training schedules & preparations agreed upon by both hosting and visiting clubs.
The players union met Thursday to evaluate the Spanish federation’s request to for permission to host official La liga match outside Spain.
The final decision could shape La liga’s broader ambition of expanding its global reach through U.S fixtures.
