Chelsea had a tricky away tie tonight when they travelled to the south coast to clash heads with Brighton & Hove Albion in the fourth round of the FA Cup. The Blues clinched a 4-2 win against the Seagulls early into the season, thanks to a stunning four-goal haul from Cole Palmer.

Brighton were determined to bounce back from last weekend’s 7-0 humiliation against Nottingham Forest. The misery continued when they conceded a dreadful goal soon after the kick-off, however, their grit and determination helped them fight back and clinch a 2-1 victory in Falmer.

Below are the Chelsea players rated in their 2-1 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Robert Sanchez: 5.5

The former Brighton custodian has been erroneous of late between the sticks. But he could have done little to stop both Georginio Rutter and Kaoru Mitoma from finding the target.

Malo Gusto: 5.5

Struggled against the hosts’ pressing game. Failed with his dribbling attempts, got dispossessed a few times and kept on losing the duels. Made little contribution high up the pitch as he had a hard time against Mitoma.

Tosin Adarabioyo: 6

Was strong in the air. Made some no-nonsense clearances but he often slowed the game down while playing it out from the back. Should have done better to close down Rutter during the early equalizer.

Trevoh Chalobah: 6

Could not calm things down in deep defence given the home side’s relentless runs and swift link-ups in and around the Chelsea half. Allowed enough space for the opponents to move the ball around.

Marc Cucurella: 6

Made his trademark runs down the left but lacked the conviction and cutting edge. Could not combine much with Jadon Sancho and Christopher Nkunku in the attacking third.

Moises Caicedo: 7.5

The former Brighton star was combative in midfield with timely tackles and recoveries. Played some ambitious long balls and passes into the final third. Was the only Chelsea player who looked purposeful with his work rate and commitment.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall: 5.5

A night to forget for the Englishman who was handed a rare start in the middle of the park. Looked off-paced while on the pitch and was eventually taken off to be replaced by Enzo Fernandez around the hour mark.

Pedro Neto: 5

Hardly had an impact down the right with no goalscoring threat throughout the contest. Lost the dribbles and duels before making way for Noni Madueke with around 20 minutes remaining.

Cole Palmer: 6.5

Played his part in the early opener when an ordinary strike from the Englishman was put into his own net by Bart Verbruggen.  Was largely ineffective as he failed to offer his creative spark high up the pitch.

Jadon Sancho: 6

Played the cross to Palmer during the goal. Created a few chances from the left but his final deliveries and the lack of decision-making let the Blues down once again.

Christopher Nkunku: 6

Spearheaded the attack amid the injury absence of Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu. Worked hard to contribute in the build-ups, but he lacked the sharpness with his moves and attempts from inside the box.

Chelsea Subs vs Brighton

Enzo Fernandez: 6.5

Added physicality and power in the centre of the pitch.

Noni Madueke: 5.5

Offered little from the flank since replacing Neto.

Made a good run down the left but lost his composure while shooting from a distance.
