The scenario: Sixth against 12th. At the beginning of March, the situation in the table was the other way round. While BVB have picked up 13 out of a possible 15 points in the last five matchdays, VfL have not managed to win a game since their 2-1 victory in Bremen at the beginning of March (two draws, five defeats). This is the longest active winless streak in the Bundesliga.
Home & away: Dortmund have the fifth-best home record (seven wins, three draws, three defeats), while Wolfsburg remain the fourth-best away team (seven wins, two draws, four defeats). VfL picked up wins in Stuttgart and Leipzig, among other places, and also earned a point in Frankfurt.
Head-to-head record: Since the 2014/15 season, Borussia have only lost one Bundesliga match against Wolfsburg, winning 16 and drawing two. The team from Lower Saxony have only suffered more defeats (45) and conceded more goals (142) against Bayern Munich than against Borussia Dortmund (34 and 119 respectively) in their Bundesliga history.
Statistics: The Black & Yellows have won four of their last five games. They could go unbeaten in six Bundesliga games in a row and win three in a row for the first time this season. Serhou Guirassy has scored six goals in just four Bundesliga appearances against VfL Wolfsburg (all for VfB Stuttgart) - against no other team has he scored more. Wolfsburg are one of only three teams (alongside Bochum and Kiel) to have only won twice in the second half of the season.
Reverse fixture: In the last game before Christmas, BVB set the tone in the first half and took a 3-0 lead in less than five minutes through Donyell Malen (25), Maximilian Beier (28) and Julian Brandt (30). Dortmund were playing liquid football and Wolfsburg were fortunate to only be down by three by the time the half-time whistle blew. But the balance of power changed in the second half. Denis Vavro pulled it back to 3-1 in the 58th minute and, shortly afterwards, Pascal Gross was sent off. Despite being outnumbered, Borussia showed great determination to hold on to their lead.
Biggest home win: The Black & Yellows set new benchmarks in consecutive years recently. First they won 6-1 in April 2022 and then 6-0 in May 2023. Karim Adeyemi scored his first Bundesliga brace and set up another goal. Julian Brandt provided three assists, notching up three goal involvements in a match for the first time in a BVB shirt. In addition to Adeyemi, Jude Bellingham also scored twice, with further goals from Sebastien Haller and Donyell Malen.Compiled by Boris Rupert
