The Whites have been linked with a move for Mike Tresor, who only joined the Clarets in the summer.
Burnley enjoyed a relatively successful festive period, and following their 1-0 derby win over Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, they have closed the gap at the top to just one point.
Leeds United took over the lead of the Championship following Sheffield United's defeats to both the Clarets and Sunderland over the last couple of weeks, and they have already started to show interest in more stars to strengthen their promotion push.
This includes Burnley's Mike Tresor, who has had an extremely bizarre season since making the move to Turf Moor permanently following a loan in 2023/24, as per Alan Nixon via Patreon.
Scott Parker's side signed the winger in the summer for £16m, but he is yet to feature this season. Supporters would have been keen to see him light up the second tier, but without a true answer as to where he has been, it seems as though his time in Lancashire is coming to an end.
Despite his lack of action for the Clarets this season, letting him go to a direct rival would not be a great idea, and it could come back to haunt them directly.
Alan Pace, the club's chairman, wants to see the 25-year-old feature before anything is done about his future, according to Nixon, and there is a chance he could still play a part if his relationship with the team is rebuilt.
Nevertheless, Football League World has asked their Burnley Fan Pundit, Will Lancaster, if the Clarets should let go of Tresor this month, whether that be a loan or permanently, and if they should stop Leeds from signing him.
He told FLW: " With Mike Tresor, I definitely think it'd be a bad idea to give him to Leeds. Obviously, Dan James and Manor Solomon are brilliant players in their own right, and while Tresor's not proven at Championship level because he hasn't played, it's just strengthening another rival.
"At this point of the season, it's not something that any sane chairman would do. I do think that the club should cash in on him. He's come up with an array of what appear to be excuses for not playing; dead legs, illness. It's been going on for the best part of five months now. So, I'm really unsure in that sense of what his future is at Burnley."
Will continued: "But I'd definitely cash in if there's any foreign interest or even a loan move. It wouldn't be too bad, because at least he's playing then playing and his market value is somewhat retained.
"But in terms of sending him to Leeds, that could be the worst thing possible."
It's been an incredibly frustrating few months for Parker, with the Tresor situation one that has perhaps got more out of hand than he ever thought it would. But, so far, he has shown calm and resolve when faced by it.
Burnley have had a tremendous season so far, and although their performances have not been at the levels that supporters would like to see every week, results have been excellent, and their team is in a very strong position.
However, there could have easily been disruption by the 25-year-old, especially when the fee that was paid for him is considered. He has let many down at the club, and they must continue to deal with it in the way that they have done.
The January window gives Burnley the opportunity to rid themselves of the problem that has been Tresor's time at Turf Moor, but they must avoid handing their promotion rivals a leg up in the race for a return to the Premier League.
