Bunny pays tribute to ‘world class’ team-mates at FWA awards | OneFootball

Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw has hailed her ‘world class’ team-mates after collecting the Football Writers’ Association Women’s Footballer of the Year Award.

The clinical Jamaican striker impressively topped the prestigious poll, collecting 53% of all votes cast.

Bunny’s lion’s share of the voting is the most a player has received for a women’s award in FWA history as she pipped colleague Alex Greenwood and Chelsea’s Lauren James to the prize.

It comes after she enjoyed another phenomenal season for Gareth Taylor’s side, scoring 22 goals and registering five assists, before her term was sadly curtailed through injury.

By scoring in our 3-1 Barclays Women’s Super League win over Manchester United she became the Club's all-time leading goalscorer with 68 - a total she's since raised to 72.

Those superb tallies in just 25 outings helped Gareth Taylor’s side fight for the title and to the Continental Cup semi-finals and FA Cup final quarter-final this term.

However, Bunny believes her scintillating displays are a product of the strong environment at the Joie Stadium.

“I’m feeling great. I’m happy to be recognised among my peers and it’s been a good season so far,” she declared at the annual FWA awards evening.

“I’ve had a little hiccup, but overall it’s been a good season and I’m happy.

“It’s been a good season. I’ve always said that the team makes me look good. I’m playing with world class players and that makes me look good at the end of the day.

“I just try to do the bits I can at the end of the pitch and work for the team and ultimately arrive at the end of the season winning stuff. Here we are.”

City enter our final WSL assignment of the term against Aston Villa on Saturday knowing three points could be enough to secure a second-ever title.

Heading into the seismic clash at Villa Park, Taylor’s team are level on points with league leaders Chelsea with goal difference keeping us from the division’s summit.

Bunny’s injury will keep her from featuring against the Villans, but she says she’s looking forward to cheering her colleagues on this weekend - despite some pre-match nerves.

“It’s exciting times. I’m going to be very nervous to be honest but I believe in my team and I love every single one of them out there.

“I know they’re going out there to do the best they can and [they] try do their best for the Club so we’ll see on Saturday.

“Definitely more nervous watching [than playing]. I used to always hear my family say it’s difficult watching. Now I’m watching on the sides on the side I totally agree.

“Once we do our best, hopefully the best is good enough.

“It’s something we spoke about at the beginning of the season that we want to do the best we can.

“Obviously, the Club does a lot for us so we want to compete and win as many titles as we can as well. We look up to the men and they’ve done tremendously.

“We get our inspiration from them and we keep pushing likewise and hopefully we can have a double [league success] at the end of the season.”
