Matchday 5 in the Bundesliga treated us to last minute winners, top-of-the-table clashes, almighty comebacks, and much more. Here is your Bundesliga recap from matchday 5.

Comeback Kings

Friday night’s game between Borussia Dortmund and VfL Bochum was billed as a must-win for the home side who were humiliated 5-1 away at Stuttgart last week. When Bochum took a 2-0 lead just after 20 minutes, you feared for BVB and head coach Nuri Şahin. Crucially, BVB pulled one back through Serhou Guirassy just before halftime which enabled them to regroup and mount a comeback.

Dortmund finally showed their resilience and quality, running out 4-2 winners with a Guirassy brace, an Emre Can penalty, and a rare goal for Felix Nmecha. The win keeps Dortmund inside the top four ahead of a tough test away at Union Berlin on Saturday.

In a much more bizarre game, Werder Bremen came from 3-0 down inside the opening 12 minutes to beat TSG Hoffenheim 4-3 at the Rhein-Necker Arena. Hoffenheim were cruising to a much-needed three points after putting Bremen to the sword early on. However, when Stanley Nsoki was sent off for the hosts, it spurred on the most unlucky of comebacks.

Bremen got to work and found themselves level at the break thanks to Julian Malatini and a brace from Jens Stage. Bremen needed just four minutes in the second half to take the lead and for Stage to complete his hattrick.

The win puts Hoffenheim coach, Pellegrino Matarazzo, under increasing pressure whilst Bremen are looking good in 10th.

Bayern Frustrated by Bayer

In matchday 5’s topspiel, Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen battled it out in an early season top-of-the-table clash.

Bayern were dominate throughout as they continued to play their high-pressing football and forcing Leverkusen to play long. However, it was B04 who took the lead with their first shot of the match. Following a corner, Robert Andrich was teed up for a volley which he dispatched expertly into the bottom corner.

Bayern eventually found a way through the Leverkusen defence thanks to another stunning volley, this time from Aleksandar Pavlović.

Bayern had 70% possession in a game which they believed them should have won. Serge Gnabry hit the post and the the bar in quick succession but Bayern just couldn’t find a way through the stubborn Leverkusen defence.

Xabi Alonso’s side will be the happier side coming away with a point and a solid defensive display. Something with Leverkusen haven’t done enough of in the Bundesliga so far this season.

Around The Grounds

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, St. Pauli followed up their first point of the season with an impressive 3-0 victory away at high-flying Freiburg. It’s their first three points in the top flight since 2011 and having been accused of missing chances in previous matchdays, St. Pauli didn’t make the same mistake at Freiburg. The newcomers only had 28% possession but from their four shots on target, three of them found the back of the net. St. Pauli have climbed up into 14th and are unbeaten in two.

There was late drama in the matches involving Wolfsburg vs Stuttgart and Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Union Berlin. Stuttgart were trailing 2-1 with ten men but managed to steal a point thanks to the ever-reliable Denis Undav in the 97th minute. Meanwhile Gladbach substitute Tomáš Čvančara secured all three points in the 96th minute to give his side their second victory of the campaign.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, there were impressive wins for RB Leipzig (4-0), Heidenheim (2-0), and Eintracht Frankfurt (4-2).
