Diego is a name still remembered extremely fondly in German football.
The Brazilian play-maker took the Bundesliga when, at the age of just 21, he arrived at Werder Bremen from Porto in the summer of 2006.
Back home, he had been schooled in the same Santos academy that had produced Pele and would soon also churn out Neymar. A natural first stop in Europe was Portugal, but it was Germany where Diego found his home from home.
That first season at Bremen was breathtaking. The club couldn't quite replicate their 2003/04 Bundesliga title but Diego was unplayable, racking up 27 goals and assists in 33 league appearances.
Diego was named 2006/07 Player of the Season by Germany’s players' union, an award won in more recent times by Robert Lewandowski, Marco Reus, Kevin De Bruyne and Jude Bellingham.
His long-range strike from more 60 metres out against Aachen also won Germany's Goal of the Year in 2007. He was even able to play his way back into the Brazil squad after a two-year absence and was part of a victorious Copa America squad for the second time in his career.
In celebration of his career and that monumental campaign with Bremen, cult kit brand hummel have unveiled a new Legend Jersey, creating a shirt inspired by the club's 2006/07 threads.

The green and white halved-shirt bears Diego's name and number ten on the back, featuring Bremens famous diamond crest in the centre. The hummel logo sits to the right and an inscription paying tribute to the Brazilian maestro appears on the left.
"Diego's impact at Werder Bremen is timeless, and we're excited to celebrate his legacy with this special jersey," said Morten Lund, hummel marketing director.
"Inspired by his first season at the club, the design reflects the unforgettable moments he gave to the fans - moments of brilliance, creativity, and passion. It's a privilege to be a part of this historic farewell, and we’re proud to partner with Werder Bremen in giving fans a lasting tribute to one of the club’s greatest players of all time."
Now 40 and retired, Diego stayed with Bremen until 2009 when Juventus paid big money to take him to Serie A. But he swifty returned to the Bundesliga, spending four years at Wolfsburg, later turning out for Atletico Madrid and Fenerbahce, before wrapping his career with six years at Flamengo.
