Football League World's resident Huddersfield Town fan pundit has discussed Alfie May's start to life in Yorkshire after joining from Birmingham City

Huddersfield Town have enjoyed a strong start to the 2025/26 League One campaign under new head coach Lee Grant, with marquee summer signing Alfie May showing goalscoring promise in the early stages of his career in West Yorkshire.
Widely tipped as pre-season title favourites, the Terriers have embarked upon a near-perfect introduction to the new campaign, with their 3-2 defeat away to ten-man Blackpool earlier this month representing the only blot on Town's record to date.
Huddersfield's four other league fixtures have all resulted in victory without conceding a single goal and they sit second in the league table after five outings, only trailing leaders Cardiff City by a sole point, while Grant's side have also advanced to the third round of the EFL Cup following wins over Leicester and Sunderland.
A significant, and long-overdue, squad rebuild was conducted throughout the summer months, with a flurry of incomings and outgoings alike taking place at the Accu Stadium.
One of the most eye-catching pieces of business, of course, was the belated signing of Alfie May from Birmingham City, which was first revealed exclusively by FLW and set the promotion hopefuls back by £1.2 million.
May, who rejected a move to Huddersfield in favour of joining Chris Davies' side the previous summer, has established himself as one of the third-tier's most lethal marksmen in recent years, scoring 20 goals apiece in three of the last full campaigns and striking on 16 occasions, along with setting up a further eight, to help Blues to an EFL-record points haul.
The 32-year-old forward has started off in respectable fashion. His goal from the penalty spot in Huddersfield's opening day victory over last season's play-off finalists, Leyton Orient, preceded a four-game wait for another goal before he struck the only goal to inspire the 1-0 win at home to Stevenage on Saturday afternoon.
So, FLW asked our resident Terriers fan pundit, Graeme Rayner, how he rates May's contributions thus far, and whether he believes the veteran striker is proving to be worth every penny of the fee coughed up to Birmingham.
In Graeme's view, May has indeed been worth the money to date, and he has argued that Huddersfield need to offer better-quality service to the ex-Blues star - who he has predicted to finish among League One's leading goalscorers once again.
"I think he is definitely worth the money.
"He's been a really good asset. The one thing we need to do is learn how to give him more service, but I think he's versatile, his attitude is brilliant, his commitment is brilliant and he's going to get some goals.
"The way he took his goal on Saturday shows the quality he's got. I think he'll get a decent number [of goals] this season and, as long as we learn how to provide service for him, I would say he'll be one of the top scorers in the division."
There is no shortage of pressure upon May's shoulders to provide the goals to fire Huddersfield back to the Championship, owing to both the fee in which the club paid for his services and his impressive record at this level in recent years.
That could, of course, be burdensome for May, who was not under quite the same pressure at Birmingham last season after the ambitious Second City outfit shelled out an eight-figure fee for Jay Stansfield. At Huddersfield, though, he's very much a talismanic figure as opposed to being part of the supporting cast - and he's not feeling the pressure of that one bit.
Two goals and an assist from his opening five games represents a solid record, and if the Terriers do manage to provide May with more goalscoring opportunities - be it through extra work on the training ground, tactical adjustments or even further reinforcements - one would only expect him to find the back of the net at an even greater rate.
