The reigning Premier League champions will travel to London on Tuesday night, where they take on Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Earlier on in the week, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side made their bow in the third round of this season’s FA Cup against League Two side Salford City in a local derby between two teams at either end of the professional football pyramid in England.
While there may have been some sort of rivalry between the two clubs, it certainly did not show on the pitch as the defending English champions thrashed the visitors 8-0 featuring a James McAtee hat-trick and Jeremy Doku brace among other performers.
Following their triumph against the League Two side over the weekend, the Citizens will take on either Leyton Orient or Derby County in the fourth round of the domestic cup competition due to take place early next month.
While Manchester City cruised to victory last time out, the same certainly cannot be said for the Bees, who suffered a shock defeat to Championship strugglers Plymouth Argyle in their post-Wayne Rooney era.
That loss against Plymouth at home continues a worrying downward trend for Thomas Frank’s men, who have now lost their last three matches at the Gtech Community Stadium. However, Pep Guardiola remains alert to the stern task that awaits his squad.
Ahead of kick-off between Brentford and Manchester City on Tuesday night, here is everything you need to know for the fixture!
Brentford against Manchester City is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 14 January with kick-off set for 19:30 (UK) at the Gtech Community Stadium in West London.
The hosts Brentford have a relatively lengthy list of players that are expected to miss out on Tuesday night, with Joshua Dasilva (knee), Ethan Pinnock (thigh), and Kristoffer Ajer (ankle/foot) all set to be sidelined until next month at the earliest.
Furthermore, Aaron Hickey (thigh), Igor Thiago Nascimento Rodrigues (knee), Gustavo Nunes Fernandes Gomes (back), and Ryan Trevitt (calf/shin/heel) are also all recovering from injury problems.
As for Manchester City and according to Pep Guardiola speaking this week, John Stones is firmly on the road to recovery from a foot injury that has kept him out since late December, but still has a way to go and as such is likely to miss Tuesday’s match against Brentford.
“I spoke with him (on Monday), and he said he feels better,” Guardiola said on Monday afternoon. “But in the past always he felt better and just can play 40 minutes, 45 minutes so that’s why maybe we have to take a little bit longer.”
Oscar Bobb, whilst returning to first-team training last week, is unlikely to play any part in Tuesday night’s game but is well on the way to a return, while Ruben Dias may also be sidelined out of caution around his recovery from injury.
The long-term absentee in Rodri remains sidelined and may not return until the FIFA Club World Cup after the European season has come to an end.
In the last five meetings between the two clubs, Manchester City have managed to get the better of Brentford on three separate occasions, with their last match coming in late September when an Erling Haaland brace gave the hosts a 2-1 comeback win.
In total, the two clubs have met on 20 previous occasions with 12 of those meetings resulting in a Manchester City victory, seven seeing Brentford win, and just the one draw between the sides.
Brentford have kept just one clean sheet in their seven Premier League games against Manchester City (W2 L5), doing so in a 1-0 home victory in May 2023.
In the four Premier League games in which Manchester City have conceded against Brentford, it has been the opening goal of the game. Yoane Wissa gave the Bees the lead after just 22 seconds in the reverse fixture.
Having won six of their first seven Premier League home games this season – earning more home points than any other side in the process – Brentford have now lost their last two at the Gtech Community Stadium. Only in October/November 2021 have they lost three in a row in the competition.
Manchester City have won their last two Premier League games, having won just one of their previous nine in the competition (D2 L6).
Brentford have the highest shot conversion rate of any side in the Premier League this season (17.8%), while only Wolves (16.2%) have a higher conversion rate against them than Manchester City (13.9%).
