Brentford are drawing up contingency plans as head coach Thomas Frank edges closer to a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur. Sources indicate Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna is among those being considered should the Dane leave west London this summer.
Frank has earned widespread acclaim for his transformative work at Brentford, guiding the club from the Championship to Premier League stability. However, success often breeds interest, and with Spurs prioritising him in their managerial search, the Bees are preparing for the possibility of a change in leadership.
According to talkSPORT, Brentford have identified McKenna as a credible successor. The club, known for its forward-thinking recruitment strategy, is said to admire the Northern Irishman’s tactical clarity and progressive football philosophy.
Tottenham’s decision to part ways with Ange Postecoglou has prompted an immediate focus on Frank. While other names — including Fulham’s Marco Silva and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola — have been linked to the vacant post, Frank remains the leading candidate.

The north London club are reportedly keen to reach a personal agreement with the Brentford manager before initiating formal talks. As such, Brentford are acting decisively behind the scenes, with McKenna’s name surfacing during internal discussions.
Frank’s potential exit would mark the end of a historic chapter at the Gtech Community Stadium. His contributions have earned him legendary status among the fanbase, not just for achieving promotion but for sustaining top-flight status with a limited budget.
Despite Ipswich’s relegation from the Premier League this season, McKenna’s stock remains high. His work at Portman Road has not gone unnoticed, particularly the manner in which he guided the club to promotion just a year earlier.
The 39-year-old was linked with roles at both Chelsea and Brighton last summer, a reflection of his growing reputation. His commitment to attacking, high-tempo football — which saw Ipswich finish as the Championship’s highest scorers during their promotion campaign — has made him a compelling option for Premier League clubs seeking ambitious leadership.
As talkSPORT reported: “Despite Ipswich’s relegation from the Premier League this season, McKenna is highly valued as a coach by a number of chiefs in the top flight.”
That appreciation continues despite the club’s drop in form, with Brentford now weighing up whether McKenna fits the profile to carry forward Frank’s legacy.
With uncertainty swirling around Frank’s future, Brentford’s planning reflects their methodical approach to football operations. The club have long prided themselves on having contingency strategies in place — a byproduct of their data-driven model and emphasis on stability.
Whether Frank departs imminently or remains for another season, Brentford appear keen to ensure continuity. McKenna represents a candidate who aligns with the club’s values: intelligent football, player development, and a fearless approach to the game.
While no decision has yet been made, Brentford’s interest in McKenna underscores the growing belief that he belongs at the Premier League level — and not necessarily with Ipswich.
