Southampton have dismissed West Ham United's initial offer for midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with sources close to the club describing the bid as well below their valuation of the 20-year-old.
According to senior Daily Echo reporter Alfie House, the proposed deal from West Ham was 'not close to the region required' in either total fee or payment structure. The offer is understood to be under ÂŁ30 million.
Southampton signed Fernandes from Brazil in 2024 for a reported ÂŁ15m. Club insiders believe the playerâs potential value significantly exceeds that investment, especially considering he is under contract for another four years.
âThe Saints invested ÂŁ15m in Mateus Fernandes a year ago because they believed they knew how much he could eventually be worth,â House added in a follow-up post. âThat's why the opening fees suggested don't make any sense.â
Fan response online was swift and critical of West Ham's attempt, with many Southampton supporters describing the offer as a âlowballâ and calling for a valuation of ÂŁ50m or more, potentially with performance-based add-ons and a sell-on clause.
