The moment has arrived, for Bournemouth to shock Manchester City and do their old boss Eddie Howe a favour at the same time.
The two teams meet on Tuesday night at the Etihad, with an 8pm kick-off.
The game put back due to Manchester City’s (losing!) appearance in the FA Cup final.
Once the final whistle goes on tonight’s match (and Palace v Wolves which is also an 8pm kick-off tonight), there will be only one more matchday in the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.
All twenty Premier League clubs in action at 4pm on Sunday.
The top two and bottom three in the Premier League are already sorted, all eyes now on who will finish third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth.
European football guaranteed for the clubs that finish in the top seven, plus also a possibility that eighth in the table could also get a European place, though that will depend on a number of factors.
The remaining matches for the Champions League chasing clubs:
Tuesday 20 May
Man City v Bournemouth (8pm)
Sunday 25 May
Fulham v Man City (4pm)
Man U v Villa (4pm)
Newcastle v Everton (4pm)
Forest v Chelsea (4pm)
This is how the Premier League table looks on Tuesday 20 May 2025 ahead of kick-off at the Etihad:
If Bournemouth could get a draw tonight, it would mean four clubs on 66 points going into the final round of matches, with Man City third on a GD (goal difference) of +24, Newcastle on +22 and Villa +9, with Forest in seventh a point behind on 65 points.
However, if Bournemouth get the win, Manchester City wouldn’t be masters of their own destiny at the weekend, as even if they won it might not be enough to get Champions League, if Newcastle, Chelsea and Villa also won.
Loads of other potential permutations as well when it comes to deciding the Champions League places.
Bournemouth were unlucky to lose 1-0 against Aston Villa in their last match, the better team and creating more chances, just not finishing them. Before that though, Eddie Howe’s old side were unbeaten in their last five Premier League games.
Manchester City’s last two matches have been a goalless draw at rock bottom Southampton and then losing 1-0 in the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace.
Bournemouth are a dangerous team, as Newcastle United know well.
Amongst their Premier League games against clubs in the top seven, Bournemouth have already defeated Man City, won home and away against Arsenal, got a draw and a win against Newcastle, a draw and a (5-0!) win against Forest, as well as draws against Chelsea and Villa.
Bournemouth will climb to ninth if winning tonight and be only two points behind Brighton, with Leicester at home on Sunday, the Cherries could potentially get eighth place, which could depending on other factors, give European football. Also, if climbing from their current eleventh and finishing eighth that would also generate almost £10m extra revenue from the TV money payout, based on league position.
These are the two starting elevens this Tuesday night:
Man City XI: Ederson, Nunes, Dias, Akanji, Gvardiol, Silva, Gundogan, Kovacic, De Bruyne, Marmoush, Haaland.
