Bolton Wanderers are preparing one final approach to try and sign Celtic striker Johnny Kenny.

Bolton Wanderers are refusing to give up on top transfer target Johnny Kenny, and are planning one final swoop to try and get a deal over the line for the Celtic striker this summer.

Steven Schumacher's pursuit of the Celtic forward has been well documented this summer, with Wanderers facing multiple setbacks which have squashed their hopes of signing him.

The 22-year-old recently agreed a new deal at Celtic Park, and scored his first goal of the season for the club on Saturday as the Bhoys cruised to a 3-0 victory over Livingston.

However, according to a fresh update from journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon page on Sunday morning, Bolton are not ready to give up on their pursuit of Kenny, and are readying another approach.

The Trotters are reportedly preparing to make one final swoop before the window slams shut on 1 September, despite the Irishman penning a new long-term deal just weeks ago.

With the clock ticking down towards the closing of the summer transfer window, clubs are beginning to rush to get their business that they need completed before the window slams shut on 1 September.

Bolton are seemingly no exception, despite an already busy window which has seen Schumacher bring in plenty of reinforcements, as the Greater Manchester club look to build on a disappointing campaign last season.

Their pursuit of Celtic's Kenny has been one that's lasted pretty much the whole window, despite bringing in two strikers already in the form of Mason Burstow and Sam Dalby respectively.

Bolton have faced multiple setbacks in their bid to sign the 22-year-old, the latest of which came a couple of weeks ago when he penned a new contract which would keep him at Celtic Park until the summer of 2029.

Despite this setback, according to reports from Nixon on Sunday morning, the Whites aren't giving up on their hopes of landing Kenny, and are reportedly readying one final bid to bring the striker south of the border.

The journalist also said the Irishman could be surplus to requirements this season for Brendan Rodgers' side, despite playing and scoring on Saturday in a 3-0 win over Livingston.

Permanent Kenny transfer seems unlikely for Bolton after contract renewal

Previous reports from Nixon had suggested that Bolton were keen on a permanent move for around £500k, but Celtic wanted £1m guaranteed, which had brought negotiations to a halt.

It remains unclear whether this would be a loan or a permanent deal this time around, as the report from Nixon didn't confirm which type of deal Bolton would be pursuing.

However, it's clear that the Bhoys rate Kenny very highly, hence the decision to hand him a bumper new four-year deal, which was in line with the player's wishes, which he stated in a previous interview.

Now he has penned a long-term contract extension, it seems highly unlikely that Celtic would be willing to let the 22-year-old depart on a permanent basis, and a loan deal may well be the only option for Bolton to bring him to the Toughsheet Community Stadium this summer.
