Huddersfield Town have made Birmingham City’s Alfie May their tenth signing of the summer.
Football League exclusively revealed that the Terriers have agreed a £1.2 million fee for the 32-year-old’s services, a move which has been confirmed on Tuesday morning.
The striker moved to St. Andrew’s from Charlton Athletic last summer but has now exited the Second City club after just a year, with playing time a concern following Blues’ promotion to the Championship.
Football League World’s Birmingham City fan pundit, Jason Moore, believes the move is the correct one for all parties involved.
“As much as I love Alfie it's 100% the right decision,” stated Jason. “We've just brought in Kyogo Furuhashi, you've got Jay Stansfield in front of him as well. There's an argument that Lyndon Dykes is also ahead in the pecking order.
“As much as I think Alfie could potentially do a job in the Championship and he probably warrants having a go at the division, for where the club wants to go and how quickly these owners want to get to the Premier League, they've got to be ruthless.
“If we are wanting to challenge at the top of the Championship and get into the Premier League, which they've said quite clearly is the goal, he's just not quite good enough.
“Alfie's a great character for the dressing room and whenever he's in interviews for the club, he seems like a right laugh. You feel that he is someone who just gets what the club's about, but he's just not good enough.
“As much as I love Alfie, even when you watched him last season, you could tell he was a goalscorer at the League One level and not higher. As a footballer, I never really thought he was going to set the world alight.
“I think it's the best decision for him. He can move up north again with his family, because that was the whole reason he left Charlton.
“He will get a decent contract to go to Huddersfield, and he'll get guaranteed playing time. He'll be the main man at Huddersfield. He wasn't the main man for us last season.
“He's definitely not going to be the main man for us this season. So, it is 100 percent the right move. I feel for him, but I think it's best for all parties.”
Huddersfield Town immediately made their intentions clear when the summer transfer window kicked off, recruiting heavily alongside the appointment of Lee Grant as manager.
May could be the most important addition yet, with the Terriers acquiring one of last season’s deadliest League One goalscorers.
The 32-year-old registered 17 goals and nine assists in all competitions for Birmingham last term on their way to a record-breaking 111-point tally.
With the signing of Furuhashi and Stansfield’s place in the squad seemingly assured, it made sense for May to move on to pastures new this summer.
Leading the line for an exciting Terriers outfit will be an exciting prospect for the forward, and he could prove to be a crucial addition for Grant and Co. come May 2026.
