The Midlands side have had a frantic summer in the transfer market so far, with ten new players having arrived at St Andrew's as they prepare for their return to the Championship following a year away in League One.

The Blues were the runaway champions last season, but the club's ambition is the Premier League, and they're not hanging about in their quest to get there. The club are planning a new, 62,000-capacity stadium, and Championship football isn't going to make that massive investment financially viable.

But the more players are brought into the club in that quest for top-flight football, the more will also have to leave. Six have already left Birmingham this summer, and the Blues are now reported to be open to offers for a player with a lengthy connection to St Andrew's.

GiveMeSport report that there could soon be a high-proifle player leaving St Andrew's with the news that Birmingham City could be open to offers for Polish international Krystian Bielik, who's run up just over 100 League appearances for the Blues over the last season.

Bielik's sale, however, would come with a couple of caveats.

It's understood that the player wasn't pleased at the club having dropped into League One, believing that his chances of being selected for his national team could have been negatively affected by playing in the third tier. It's anticipated that he would want to stay in the Championship.

Wage expectations could be a sticking point, but Birmingham clear-out is necessary

Bielik, first joined Birmingham City on loan from Arsenal in January 2017 and made 10 appearances for them over the second half of that season. After signing for Derby County on a permanent deal in 2019, he returned to St Andrew's on a season-long loan in 2022, and made his signature permanent the following year. He signed a contract extension with them in the summer of 2024, tying him to the club until 2027.

One potential sticking point regarding any move could be financial. Bielik has two years to run on his contract, meaning that a transfer fee could be payable, although Birmingham may choose to waive this or significantly reduce it to get the player out the door and off their books.

Wages could be a sticking point. With his wages at £20,000-a-week, Bielik just about squeezes into the 100 highest paid players in the Championship. But the number of Championship clubs prepared to pay that for a player apparently deemed surplus to requirements at a club just promoted into League One may be limited. It may be that the player has to take a wage cut in order to stay in the Championship.

Birmingham City, meanwhile, continue their rebuild with the aim of achieving Premier League football at the earliest opportunity. They cannot afford to have too bloated a squad, and players are going to have to be offloaded if they're to continue to grow. And despite those wages, Bielik's vast Championship experience and international pedigree may mean that there's no shortage of suitors as he prepares for the next chapter in his career. It may be the right time for all concerned for him to move on.
