FLW's Birmingham fan pundit has given his verdict on links to a loan move for Eiran Cashin

Birmingham City are set to seal the loan signing of Brighton and Hove Albion defender Eiran Cashin.

Blues' interest in Cashin was first reported on Wednesday by journalist Dan Marsh, who described the ambitious Championship side as the favourites to sign the centre-back on a temporary basis.

It has now been reported that a deal has been agreed for Cashin to return to the second-tier with Blues for the upcoming 2025/26 campaign.

Cashin made the switch from Derby County to Brighton back in January, but struggled for game time in Fabian Hurzeler’s squad, having previously starred for the Rams in both the Championship and League One.

He featured just twice in the Premier League last season, with both appearances coming as a substitute.

Birmingham City backed for Eiran Cashin signing

When asked about the impending arrival of Cashin, FLW’s Birmingham fan pundit Jason Moore claimed it’s a deal that could be excellent for the club.

He believes they need an extra centre-back, and that the Irishman is an upgrade on bringing Ben Davies back to St. Andrew’s from Rangers.

“It’s one of the positions we’ve looked at all summer and we’ve not really seen many decent links,” Moore told Football League World.

“Everyone was expecting Davies to come back, and to be honest I’m more than happy to take Cashin over Ben Davies.

“I think that’s a really, really good signing.

“You never know, I assume Brighton rate him highly and they want him to go and develop and then go play for them at some point, but you never know, he might come to us, he might develop and we might try and buy him.

“I think it’s a brilliant signing.

“Left-footed centre-back, he can potentially go in at left-back and cover Alex Cochrane as and when he needs to, cause we don’t have a left-back cover currently with Lee Buchanan being out for so long.

“It just makes sense on so many levels.

“It’s a loan, not spending big money on it, if he does well we could potentially buy him.

“But, yeah, I think it’s perfect and I think there will be an expectation that he plays football, which I think he definitely will get games.

“But I also think it’s a clever move because you can still have that partnership of [Christoph] Klarer and [Phil] Neumann and not have the expectation that we play Cashin because he’s a permanent transfer.

“I think we can set the back four as it needs to be, have your partnership of Klarer and Neumann and Cashin can be there to fill in as and when he needs to because he will be needed.

“I think it’s a very good signing, and I can’t wait for the season to get started now.”

Birmingham will start their Championship campaign on 8 August with a home clash against Ipswich Town.

Eiran Cashin needs game time this season at Birmingham City

Cashin made the step up to the Premier League, but hasn’t been able to earn his way into Hurzeler’s plans at Brighton.

On that basis, he should go out on loan and try to continue his development elsewhere with consistent minutes.

Birmingham have defensive options, so competition for minutes will be stiff, but he’s proven himself as a capable Championship calibre centre-back during his time at Derby.
