Albion's Norwegian rock is heading onto the continent for the next chapter of his career.

West Bromwich Albion are verging on the sale of Torbjorn Heggem to Bologna, in a deal that is reported to be worth £10 million.

A strong first full season in the Championship was always likely to bring attention to the 27-year-old. He started his second season with the Baggies last weekend against Blackburn Rovers, playing the full 90 in their 1-0 win, but that is set to be the only competitive match that Heggem plays under Ryan Mason.

It has been reported in Norway that only minor details and bits of paperwork stand in the way of the centre-back completing his move to the Italian side. He looked set to play in Tuesday night's EFL Cup tie versus Derby County but was pulled from the squad shortly before the match due to the advancing negotiations.

Torbjorn Heggem closing in on West Brom exit

Bologna have been pursuing him for weeks now, with an initial €6.5 million bid being placed by the Serie A outfit, according to The Athletic.

The two parties have since been working on a deal that will see West Brom earn a huge profit on the £525,000 that they were reported to have paid his old club IF Brommanpojkarna around a year ago.

On top of the £10 million package that West Brom are close to agreeing on with Bologna, Albion will also have a sell-on clause for any future moves made by Heggem, as per Lewis Cox.

The Baggies' chairman, Shilen Patel, said earlier in the summer that the club wasn't going to have an abundance of money to chuck about this summer.

This sale will definitely improve their standing when it comes to the Profit & Sustainability Rules, and could allow them to open up the taps a little more in the remaining weeks of the transfer window in order to improve Mason's squad. Whether they choose to go after a replacement for Heggem remains to be seen.

West Brom fans are right to be both sad and happy about Torbjorn Heggem's departure

Unsurprisingly, a number of the supporters are sad to see such a talented player leave. Whenever someone of the Norwegian international's quality is in your squad, you know that your club is going to be at risk of losing them.

At least West Brom are getting a good sum of money in return for the 27-year-old, one that is representative of his abilities. He played 45 games in the Championship for the West Midlands club last season. He only scored once but helped to stop opponents from doing so on 13 occasions.

Ultimately, this sale comes back to the challenges of modern day football, but also the beauty of it. West Brom unearthed a gem in Heggem. The law of the jungle, though, is that, unless you're at the top of the food chain, there's always going to be someone bigger that can take advantage of their dominating size.

The good thing for West Brom is that this body blow should, in theory, actually give them a chance of becoming stronger off the back of it.

They have already made two central defensive signings this summer, with Nathaniel Phillips and George Campbell arriving from Liverpool and CF Montreal, respectively. The former started alongside Heggem for the Blackburn match at the Hawthorns. Campbell may now be in line for a starting spot as the Norwegian edges closer to his Bologna move.
