Jude Bellingham has said a transfer to Liverpool ‘wasn’t as close as a lot of the media made out’ before his move to Real Madrid in 2023.
Bellingham was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool after deciding to leave Borussia Dortmund and held talks with the Reds over a transfer.
The 21-year-old faces Liverpool as a Real Madrid player in the Champions League this evening. He enjoyed a dream debut season with the Spanish side in 2023/24, where he won La Liga and the Champions League under Carlo Ancelotti. His performances were recognised with the La Liga Player of the Season award.
Ahead of their European meeting at Anfield this evening, Bellingham has revealed how close he came to representing the Reds. The England international said he had ‘conversations with a few clubs’ when leaving Borussia Dortmund but said it was impossible to ignore the interest of Real Madrid.
“It probably wasn’t as close as a lot of the media made out,” Bellingham said when speaking to TNT Sports this week.
“I had conversations with a few clubs when leaving Borussia Dortmund.
“I made that decision and they gave me permission to speak to a few clubs, and one thing I have to say is all the clubs I spoke to were very respectful of me and my family.
“That for me was of huge value and something I really respected so I don’t want to say anything that sounds disrespectful to them, but when Real Madrid come knocking on the door it shakes the whole house.
“It’s hard not to open and accept, so I think – as I said before – it’s not a matter of the teams weren’t good or bad when I spoke to them, it’s just Real Madrid are on another level.”
