BBC Sport comments from ‘neutrals’ – Interesting on Newcastle United after defeat at Fulham

Intriguing to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United’s defeat to Fulham.

The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.

Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media-inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.

On this occasion, the politics and trolls are back!

You would almost think Newcastle United had just lost their first game of the season and a chance to put the knife in…

The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, Fulham fans and the odd Newcastle supporter also contributing:

‘Sadly the headline was Newcastle fail to go top, not Fulham…’

‘Something’s not right at Newcastle.’

‘Paymasters losing interest?’

‘Overrated manager?’

‘Bruno, great assist for Fulham’s third! Schär could and should have made it 2-2. Hopefully they’ll get a bit fitter as the European playing teams start to struggle.’

‘We can’t bs it, we’ve been off it all season and scraped results. A nice habit to get results when playing poorly, but that only lasts for a short time in this league.’

‘Toon fan here and I have to admit, that we should have been at least 4 down by half time. It’s just sheer bad luck on Fulham’s part that we weren’t. Newcastle just didn’t turn up. Toon picked up the pace & the work rate. Murphy made a huge impact. Newcastle’s luck had to run out at some point. Well played Fulham & good luck for the rest of the season.’

‘From Chelsea Fan

Been reading highest ratings on this convo and it is nice to see Toon fans be so honest in their opinions on the game.

Its kinda weird watching Newcastle as they play well at home but away from home its like they do not put in a shift. It makes them look like they are tired but then next game at home they win easy.

Well done Fulham, you did really well today.’

‘Let’s unpack this…

v Southampton – when you’re down to 10 men you’re going to give up possession. There are ways to play well other than free flowing football.

v AFCB – similar thing, no fluency but good in patches and those patches got a point.

v Spurs – again giving up possession but winning quality in patches. See a theme here?

I don’t see “abysmal” anywhere. Simplistic hyperbole.’

‘Top stuff from Fulham ESR, showing well, and Nelson no bad addition. Poor from Newcastle though, some chances but outplayed.’

‘As a Gooner it’s clear to me we should have kept ESR and got rid of Martenelli, one is a proper player, the other is Perry Groves 2.0.’

‘Were you saying that 2 seasons ago when he was top scorer? Fickle.’

‘Unfortunately too many players look off their game. Indeed it would be easier to say who did perform. I expect the Sean Longstaff critics will be disappointed they can’t mark him down!’

‘cracks were papered over last week, with 2 lucky goals.’

‘Harvey Barnes goal was lucky? Clear and obvious troll.’

‘Linton , hes only there to pick up his check.’

‘Newcastle United have been second best in every game this season and don’t deserve any of the points they have up to now.’

‘Ridden their luck a bit but deserve most of their points.’

‘I think we all know that NUFC will never win anything.’

‘Have Newcastle got any injuries to blame ? Or can we now agree they are a mid table team at best?’

‘A league cup exit in midweek against the Wombles is a distinct possibility now.The feel good factor is ebbing away.’

‘Are you a Mackem?’

‘He is.’

‘I’ve often felt that you can tell the quality of a team’s fans by how they react when they’re beaten. Lots of honest comments on here praising Fulham, and the only complaint I heard when leaving the stadium was from a Newcastle fan about getting a parking ticket earlier today. Best of luck this season Newcastle, a respectful and decent bunch.’

‘To be fair, Newcastle had been lucky so far this season and it was time it turned against them.’

‘The ongoing injury to Botman and the red card for Schar were completely the opposite of lucky.

I think what you mean to say is Newcastle have maximised the number of points they were able to accumulate this season through moments of individual skill and ability rather than through a consistently high quality team performance as evidenced in many games last season.

Today 2 errors outweighed that.’

‘Sorry Newcastle but Eddie isn’t the man to get you to the summit.’

‘Well of the only 3 managers to get more Premier League points since Eddie arrived, two are in jobs that they would probably prefer to stay at than move to Newcastle, and the other is a quitter who quit.

So I guess we’ll stick with Eddie, thank you very much.’

‘Let’s keep things in perspective here. Yes, the numpties will have their fun with the “sack Eddie” nonsense, but losing at Fulham can happen to any team, even Man City. Especially when they go there on a poor run of form.

We put up a fight, got 1 back, had chances in the second half before the late 3rd goal ended any hope. Nowhere near as devastating as losing at home to Forest was last year.’
