BBC pundit “doesn’t like” Maresca’s team decision which is causing chaos at the back

When the teamsheets for our game against Leicester at the weekend came out, there were certainly a few surprises. In goal, Enzo Maresca had reverted to using Robert Sanchez after Filip Jorgensen had played a few league games.

Speaking on BBC 5Live’s Monday Night Club, former Premier League goalkeeper Shay Given said he didn’t like this model of switching back and forth between the two of them depending on form:

“I don’t like the idea of chopping and changing your goalkeeper. [Filip] Jorgensen made one mistake against Aston Villa, played again in the next few games and then got dropped again [against Leicester].

“He is well within his right to start a stretch of games because Sanchez has already made quite a few mistakes this season. It feels like Jorgensen made one mistake and is back out again. I suppose that’s not ideal.”

Chelsea now have two nervy goalkeepers

Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen in a montage together.

We couldn’t agree more. While we were all in favour of dropping Sanchez, we were never convinced that Jorgensen would actually be an upgrade. The one thing you can’t do it start swapping them back and forth as we have done. Now both of them feel the pressure of a single mistake costing them their job.

If Maresca was going to give the gloves back to Sanchez after a single mistake from Jorgensen, he never should have given them to the Dane in the first place. Now we’ve got two spooked goalies rather than one who at least feels he has the backing of his coach, even if he is in bad form.

Sanchez had almost nothing to do on Sunday as Leicester failed to summon much of an attacking presence, but did wildly lunge for a high ball he couldn’t reach, spreading panic among his defenders in his usual style.
