In recent weeks, there have been numerous rumours and speculation surrounding Leon Goretzka and his participation in the European Football Championship. According to consistent media reports, national coach Julian Nagelsmann has decided not to take the Bayern professional to Euro 2024.

As BILD and Sky reported on Tuesday, Bayern star Leon Goretzka will not be nominated for the home European Championships.

The 29-year-old had hoped for a place in the German European Championship squad until the very end: „I’ve tried everything in my power over the last few months to show my best side. In the end, it’s up to the national coach,“ he explained last weekend.

According to BILD, national coach Julian Nagelsmann has already personally informed the FCB star of his decision.

There had already been indications in March that the former Bayern coach was not planning to play Goretzka when the midfielder did not receive an invitation for the two test matches against France and the Netherlands. Goretzka played his last international match in November 2023 in the 2-0 defeat against Austria.

Goretzka loses squad place to Pavlovic

The 57-time international (14 goals) has lost his place in the squad to team-mate Aleksandar Pavlovic, of all people. The 20-year-old was called up to the provisional squad of the German team yesterday.

Particularly bitter for Goretzka: his form curve has been on a clear upward trajectory in recent weeks.

Goretzka has been a permanent fixture in the German national team since the 2021 European Championship and has been one of the absolute regulars in recent years.

With the return of Toni Kroos, captain İlkay Gündoğan as well as Pavlovic, Robert Andrich and Patrick Groß, Nagelsmann has numerous options in midfield.
