Jamal Musiala’s serious ankle injury during Bayern Munich’s Club World Cup quarterfinal against Paris Saint Germain has left the club reeling, with players and staff visibly shaken by the incident, according to Bavarian Football Works.
The 22-year-old midfielder was forced off the pitch after a disturbing collision, and early medical assessments suggest he will be sidelined for at least four to five months. Optimistic projections indicate he could return in November, but the club is expected to monitor his recovery closely due to the severity of the injury.
Musiala’s absence is a devastating blow for Bayern, particularly as the club faces a period of transition after recent high-profile departures. The reaction within the squad underscored just how sudden and impactful the incident was. Alphonso Davies, currently out himself with an ACL tear, was watching the game remotely and his response summed up the mood in the camp. Streaming the match, Davies shouted “Oh my God, no!” and could be seen clutching his head, eventually reduced to silence as the gravity of the situation became clear. Davies and Musiala are close friends, and having experienced his own long-term setback, Davies’ empathy was evident.
The emotional toll wasn’t limited to those sidelined. Thomas Müller, who had just played what may have been his final Bayern match, was questioned postgame about the possibility of extending his contract given Musiala’s injury and the club’s depleted attack. Müller, visibly uncomfortable, answered, “I understand why you ask this question, but it feels uncomfortable to me,” emphasizing that it was neither the right time nor place to discuss career decisions while a teammate was dealing with an agonizing setback.
The injury and its aftermath cast a shadow over Bayern’s 2-0 defeat to PSG, a result that also ended their Club World Cup campaign. With Musiala likely unavailable for much of the autumn and Davies not expected back before November either, Bayern will now have to rethink their plans both on and off the pitch.
As coach Vincent Kompany and the club’s management assess their options, the focus now will be on Musiala’s recovery and on future squad decisions. The Bavarian giants, no strangers to adversity, find themselves looking for inspiration as they navigate through an unexpected crisis, awaiting the day when both Musiala and Davies are fit to return.
