The "why" behind the match: Connecting with fans and celebrating tradition

This special encounter is part of Bayern’s celebrated “Traumspiel” (Dream Match) tradition - an initiative dating back to 2007, where once every two years, the stars of FC Bayern travel to play a match against one of their official fan clubs. It’s more than football - it’s a celebration of connection and community.

This year’s game has added significance: it coincides with FC Bayern’s 125th club anniversary, making the match both a celebration of the club’s storied history and its dedication to fans worldwide.

Fan clubs from around the globe apply for the honor, and this time, the Red Eagles Austria, founded in 2017, stood out - winning the “Dream Match” selection with a creative application video featuring local fire & rescue services, holiday scenes, and musical tribute by Rainhard Fendrich - all underlining Bayern’s global appeal and rooted traditions.

The stadium is, unsurprisingly, packed - about 5,000 fans are expected to gather in Imst, creating a festival-like atmosphere with DJs, fan parades, fun attractions for kids, and a lively supporting program beyond the pitch!

Here’s a quick trip down memory lane: since the inaugural “Dream Match” in 2007 (with the Höslwanger club in Höslwang), the club has held this fan-club extravaganza 12 times - visiting places like Nabburg, Waging, Nordhorn, Weiden, Memmingen, Deggendorf, Coburg, Vilshofen, and most recently Südtirol in 2023 with the “Weinbeisser Kaltern” fan club.

Bayern are determined to keep the relationship to their fans strong - the fact they are putting this year's “Dream Match” in between a Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal game is proof of their commitment! And if you thought Bayern would turn up with just youth players, you'd be mistaken - check out FCB's starting eleven and XI against Red Eagles Austria down below:
