Once highly thought of at Bayern Munich, Malik Tillman joined PSV on a permanent basis in the summer following a successful campaign with the Dutch champions and has since revealed his reasoning for leaving the Rekordmeister.

The 22-year-old played just 165 minutes of first team football for Bayern Munich before spending a season on loan at Rangers where he scored 12 and created five in 43 games across all competitions. The Scottish side wanted to make the move permanent but were unable to find an agreement with Bayern Munich.

Instead, Tillman returned to Germany but was loaned to PSV. Under Peter Bosz, the American scored nine and created 15 in 40 games before making a permanent move.

With four goals and one assist in eight Eredivisie games already this season, Tillman is close to replicating his form last season since joining the Dutch club for €12m.

When questioned why he left Bayern Munich at Thursday’s press conference ahead of the USMNT team game against Panama in Texas, Tillman said: “The whole thing depended on Bayern and they didn’t want me anymore. PSV had the right to buy me, they were the first option. So I didn’t really have a chance to say anything.”

But Tillman is also happy with his move to PSV, adding: “I also wanted to stay at PSV, so it’s a good thing.” The American has scored 13 and created 12 in 36 Eredivisie games.
