Eric Dier’s rumored departure from FC Bayern Munich has been officially confirmed. FCB sporting director Christoph Freund relayed the news at a Friday press conference. The 49-times-capped English international will leave the Bundesliga after an 18-month-long stint in Bavaria.
Dier supplied many memorable moments during his time with the German record champions. Among these was a famous introductory press conference during which he spoke in his plans to learn German with former Tottenham teammate Harry Kane.
There was also a famous incident during a January 2024 post-match interview in which the Cheltenham native spoke with a German accent. This interview – along with a similar scene involving Jadon Sancho – became a cult classic among the German footballing public.
Freund confirmed that Bayern had approached Dier with a contract renewal offer, but the 31-year-old wished to continue his career elsewhere. Dier made a total of 49 competitive appearances for Bayern. He scored his first Bundesliga goal just last week against Mainz 05.
“We’ve been in talks with Eric over the past few weeks about a possible contract extension,” Freund remarked at the press conference. “He has nevertheless now informed us that he will not be extending his contract and will be leaving us at the end of the season.
”We’ve had a great time with Eric and he’s done really well,” Freund continued. “He’s a great guy has been great with the team. Hopefully he’ll now cap his time at Bayern with his first title, that would be very nice for him.
“There are only positive things to say about Eric,” Freund concluded. ”He felt very comfortable in Munich and with the club. It was certainly not an easy decision for him, but now he’s focused on achievinghis first major title. Then he will move on.”
Freund left open whether or not Dier will be one of the players to receive a “mini-contract extension” ahead of the coming club World Cup, merely noting that this matter would be “discussed internally.“
