Over the last few weeks, Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte has been linked to Manchester United. However, the two sides haven’t officially reached an agreement and one journalist explained what’s holding up the transfer.

Late Wednesday, L’Equipe shared new details about the status of the Ugarte deal. The French outlet reported that PSG and Manchester United are close to finalizing a loan agreement with a €60 million obligation to buy for Ugarte.

The clubs have significantly bridged their differences tonight, and the deal could be wrapped up within the next few hours. Moreover, journalist Duncan Castles provided more information that emerged on Thursday, but his details reveal what’s holding up the deal between the two clubs.

“One of the reasons this [Ugarte] deal is being delayed is because it comes down to something of a battle of egos between Nasser Al Khelaifi, the President of PSG, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe,” Castles said.

“People tried to say there was a separation between Qatar’s bid for Man United and the ownership of PSG, however my guidance throughout that process was that it was a state-run attempt to purchase United. Qatar lost, Ratcliffe won, and as I’m being told, Khelaifi wants to remind Ratcliffe that he can’t get his way with everything.”

Ugarte made 37 total appearances for the reigning Ligue 1 champions last season, recording three assists. The former Sporting Lisbon standout began the first half of the campaign in impressive fashion, but his minutes fell off in the second half of the season as he was used more as a rotational player rather than a starter.
