Barcelona’s hopes of landing Nico Williams took a huge hit after the winger chose to renew his contract with Athletic Club until 2035.

Nico had been a top priority for Barcelona, and the news of his extension has shaken the club’s plans for strengthening their attack.

His decision to stay in Bilbao, with improved terms, means the Blaugrana will need to look elsewhere to bolster their squad for the future.

Bernal reacts to the news

The announcement came as a surprise to many, including Marc Bernal, who was caught off guard while speaking at the first Summer Camp he organised in his hometown of Berga.

Bernal, who is in the final phase of recovering from a serious injury, became the first Barcelona player to publicly react to Nico’s contract renewal.

However, the young midfielder chose to avoid controversy, praising Nico while making it clear he’s focused on his own teammates.

“Nico is going to extend his contract? What can I say about Nico? He’s a good player, but it’s none of my business.

“I only focus on the players, my teammates, who are at the same club as me, and that’s it,” he stated, finishing with a polite “Congratulations on the renewal.”

Focused on recovery and return

Apart from addressing Nico’s renewal, Bernal opened up about his recovery journey during the camp.

He shared that returning from his serious injury has been challenging, but he’s determined to come back stronger.

“It’s been difficult, but everyone has to be on the same page for my return. It’s a process that has allowed me to get to know myself better,” Bernal explained.

He also expressed gratitude to Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, whose support has been crucial during his rehabilitation.

“He’s instilled confidence and peace of mind in me,” Bernal said, adding, “The future motivates me. I have a lot of hope and excitement to return to full confidence and help as much as possible,” he concluded.
