Barcelona and Inter Milan clash in the Champions League semi final on Wednesday, April 30th, at 8pm (UK time). The match will be broadcast live in the United Kingdom on TNT Sport.
Barcelona defeated Borussia Dortmund in the quarter finals whilst Inter Milan were able to move past Bayern Munich. With a place in the final on the line, which side will gain a first leg advantage in this tie?
Raphinha has averaged 4.28 shots per 90 in the Champions League this season, having 25 attempts on goal in six matches. The Brazilian forward has been in sparkling form this season and is one of the names in contention for the Ballon D’Or. His importance to Barcelona has been highlighted this term, with Raphinha finding the net 34 times in 56 games in all competitions, including 12 in the Champions League where only Serhou Guirassy has scored more (13).
Robert Lewandowski has scored 11 goals in 13 Champions League matches this season, averaging 0.84 goals per game in the competition. It’s been another standout year for the Polish forward, who has scored 42 goals in 54 games in all competitions and he’ll be tasked with leading the line for Barcelona in this all-important first leg tie in the semi-final.
Barcelona were able to overcome Borussia Dortmund in the quarter final of the competition, securing the win via a 5-3 aggregate win. Their first leg saw them run out 4-0 winners with a 3-1 defeat in the second leg not being enough for Dortmund to force the game to extra time. Prior to that clash, Barcelona defeated Benfica in the round of 16, running out 4-1 winners on aggregate.
Domestically, Barcelona are flying. They currently sit top of La Liga, holding a four point lead over Real Madrid and come into this game off the back of three league wins in a row. They were also crowned Copa del Rey winners at the weekend, winning an ill-tempered clash with their old enemies, Real Madrid, 3-2 after extra time. Form is certainly on the side of Barcelona who have only tasted defeat once in their last 28 games.
Inter Milan have reached this stage by beating Feyenoord in the round of 16 by an aggregate score of 4-1 before being drawn against Bayern Munich in the quarter final. A first leg 2-1 victory set them up well and they were able to secure a 2-2 draw in the second leg to run out 4-3 winners overall.
Inter are in horrible form at the moment, losing their last three games, falling to defeat against Bologna and Roma in Serie A and crashing out of the Coppa Italia thanks to a 3-0 loss to bitter rivals, AC Milan. This poor form has cost them top spot in Serie A, with Napoli overtaking them and currently holding a 3 point lead. Their last victory in all competitions came five games ago and Inter will be desperate to get back to winning ways at a crucial time of the season.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Marc Casado remain out for the season, while Dani Olmo is expected back in time for the first leg of this tie.
After missing the quarter final, Denzel Dumfries could be back for Inter by the time this game comes around, but Valentin Carboni and Piotr Zielinski remain doubts.
These two sides have met many times over the past few years with Barcelona holding the advantage with two wins to Inter’s one. Two of their last five matches have ended in draws.
