The future of Wojciech Szczesny is currently one of the hottest topics in the Barcelona camp right now.

The Pole’s contract expires at the end of the season, but Barcelona are keen on renewing his contract, even handing him a one-year renewal with an option to extend.

Szczesny, though, is yet to respond and is taking into consideration various factors which may impact his final decision. One of them is his wife, Marina.

Szczesny’s wife to play a key role in renewal

According to Diario SPORT, Marina Szczesna is expected to have the final say in whether or not the veteran goalkeeper accepts Barça’s renewal offer for the 2025–26 season.

While the club has made its intentions clear, Szczesny has not yet met with sporting director Deco to deliver his verdict.

More clarity arrived after Barça’s title-clinching win over Espanyol. Speaking to the press, Szczesny admitted his hesitation stems not only from family matters but also from a personal reflection on his role next season.

“If I extend my contract, it will be because I’m convinced I’m a guarantee of quality on the bench next season,” he said.

“So I have to decide because this is also a new situation for me. I have to assess whether I’m capable of accepting it mentally, of supporting Marc and helping him throughout the season,” he added.

However, the fact of the matter remains – Maria will play a crucial role in deciding whether or not Szczesny should continue at Barcelona next season.

The club, for its part, have their fingers crossed but would also appreciate a quicker response, as their summer plans do hinge on the goalkeeper’s final decision.
