Barcelona star Marc-André ter Stegen is unlikely to close out the summer with his status as the club’s captain intact.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who have on Sunday provided an insight into the situation.

Goalkeeper Ter Stegen has of course seen his future thrown into serious doubt across the summer to date.

Owing to the arrival of Joan García in Catalunya’s capital, the German has been deemed surplus to requirements by those behind the scenes in Barcelona.

Ter Stegen himself remains adamant that he will be going nowhere this summer, ready to stay put to fight for his place between the posts in Hansi Flick’s squad.

In the case of the 33-year-old being granted his wish, though, an awkward year could lie ahead…

As confirmed by MD:

‘There is a current of opinion within the club that is inclined to tweak the structure of the captaincy.’

In other words, many behind the scenes at the Camp Nou are of the feeling that Ter Stegen should be stripped of his role as first-team captain, in the case of the shot-stopper refusing an exit.
