Barcelona have taken great steps towards finalising the first new signing for next season in Jonathan Tah with the free transfer all but done at this point.

The planning for the upcoming summer transfer window, however, goes far beyond the German defender’s signing as Barcelona also have their eyes on a quality winger and striker for the long term.

Jonathan David, thus, is one option the Catalans consider as the Canadian international will be a free agent next summer and could strengthen the number 9 position given his stellar run at Lille.

Time for a final decision

As relayed by SPORT in a recent update, the Barcelona board are not yet convinced by David and there is no consensus over his signing next summer.

However, the club must make a decision fast and will take a call in the coming weeks.

The player has made it clear that it is his dream to don the garnet-and-blue colours and is even holding off big offers from the Premier League hoping for a move to Spain. Barcelona, however, are concerned about whether he will be a good stylistic fit.

The Catalans see the Ligue 1 star to be a lethal striker but one who thrives in spaces, something he will find limited access to at Barcelona given the possession-dominant style of play and La Liga’s closed defences.

David is willing to even play second fiddle to Robert Lewandowski initially and is convinced he can make a mark at the club. Barcelona consider him an option but must make a decision soon.

It is speculated that the overall deal to bring David in will cost up to €80 million including a signing bonus and his salary for five seasons.

That figure sits well for the club, but the priority continues to be one of Viktor Gyokeres or Erling Haaland, although neither move would be feasible for 2025.

With David entertaining offers from England, there may be a time-limit for how long he would be prepared to wait for Barcelona. As such, the Catalans must take a decision sooner rather than later.
