Heading into the summer transfer window, Girona midfielder Aleix Garcia was one of the players Barcelona were looking at as a target.

The 26-year-old Spaniard has enjoyed a fine season with the Catalan club and had been linked with the Blaugrana as a potential cost-effective target to reinforce the midfield department.

Garcia, for his part, has made no secret of his desire to play for Barcelona in the past and it was believed that they could sign him for around €14-15 million.

Aleix Garcia likely to join Bayer Leverkusen

However, over the past few days, there has been a fresh development surrounding Aleix Garcia and his future.

Indeed, Fabrizio Romano reports that German champions Bayer Leverkusen are confident of signing Garcia, meaning Barcelona are likely to miss out on his capture.

The Bundesliga champions are planning to advance the deal to sign the Girona midfield mainstay this week so as to tie up the operation at the earliest possible.

It is being claimed that Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso already called and spoke to Garcia last month and the midfielder is eager to make the jump to Germany.

As such, personal terms are unlikely to be an issue and the only thing now is for the two clubs to reach an agreement over a transfer fee for the Spaniard.

The update from Romano adds that Leverkusen are very confident of closing the deal for Garcia very soon.

What about Barcelona?

With Xavi no longer in charge and Hansi Flick set to take over as manager, Joshua Kimmich has been identified as the priority target in midfield by Barcelona.

However, recent reports suggest that a move for the German international could be complicated as the Catalans are not in a position to match his €19.5 million per year gross salary demands.
