According to a report from Sky Sports Germany, Barcelona sporting director Deco is very keen on bringing Alejandro Grimaldo back to the club.

Barcelona are said to be seriously interested in the 29-year-old wing-back, who is currently playing for Bayer Leverkusen, and given their interest, the German side is believed to be asking between €30 million and €40 million for his transfer.

Grimaldo, who developed through Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy, has built a strong reputation in Germany.

Under Xabi Alonso, he has become one of the best attacking full-backs around, and since moving to Germany from Benfica, his value and importance have only increased.

Talks have begun

Meanwhile, the report mentions that talks about a potential return are already happening behind the scenes.

Although Grimaldo’s current contract with Leverkusen runs until 2027, there is an understanding between the player and the club’s management, and as part of this agreement, he would be allowed to leave if the right offer comes in.

Back in March, Grimaldo gave an interview where he openly admitted that playing for Barcelona has always been his dream.

“It’s a goal I have. I have it very clear. Leverkusen know it too. I want to return to Spain soon because it’s my country, and I want to enjoy playing there,” he said.

Grimaldo also added, “I grew up at La Masia. It’s the club that shaped me as a player and as a person. It’s the team I’ve wanted to play for since I was a child.”

What does it mean for Barcelona’s current options?

At Barcelona, Alejandro Balde is firmly the first-choice left-back. However, Grimaldo’s arrival would likely mean the end of Gerard Martin’s time in the first team.

The 23-year-old has stepped up well whenever Balde has been unavailable, showing that he can be trusted.

But by going after someone like Grimaldo, it is clear Barcelona are aiming to bring in more experience to strengthen the squad.

The club seems to believe that having a seasoned player like Grimaldo would add more security and quality to their defence moving forward.
