Barcelona fans question club’s decision on new captain | OneFootball

Droves of supporters of La Liga giants Barcelona have on Thursday called into question the club’s decision-making.

This comes after the new captain in Hansi Flick’s squad was officially unveiled.

The subject of the captaincy situation in Catalunya’s capital has of course dominated the headlines across all of Spain for several days now.

This comes after widespread reports were forthcoming, confirming that the Camp Nou brass were giving real consideration to stripping the under-fire Marc-André ter Stegen of his armband.

In turn, it came as little surprise when an announcement regarding precisely as much was forthcoming on Thursday afternoon.

As per a statement across Barcelona’s website and social media platforms:

‘FC Barcelona hereby announces that, following the disciplinary proceedings opened against player Marc-André ter Stegen, and until this matter is definitively resolved, the club, by mutual agreement with the Sporting Direction and the coaching staff, has decided to temporarily withdraw his role as first-team captain.’

Also confirmed as part of the Blaugrana’s statement was the fact that, for the time being at least, Ronald Araújo will take over captaincy duties in Hansi Flick’s squad.

Safe to say, however, that news of as much has not exactly gone down well with many of a Barca persuasion…

With Araújo not considered first-choice at present, and fresh off something of a disappointing individual campaign in 2024/25, many have been quick to call into question the call for him to take up such an important role in the Camp Nou dressing room.
