Riquelme, named after the legendary Juan Roman Riquelme, a former Barcelona player and current Boca Juniors president, is quickly making a name for himself at Fluminense.

Who is Riquelme Felipe?

The 18-year-old forward made his first-team debut in January and has since become one of the most exciting players.

Riquelme has developed through Fluminense’s youth academy since joining the club at just 10 years old. While he was known as a prolific goal scorer during his time in the youth ranks, he has evolved his game at the senior level.

As of today, it is said that he is more focused on teamwork, using his vision and skill to set up chances for his teammates.

This style of play has drawn comparisons to his namesake, with Riquelme Felipe often prioritising the collective over personal glory.

Barcelona focused on emerging talents

Barcelona’s ongoing financial challenges mean the club is now prioritising smart investments in young, promising talents rather than expensive transfers.

The signing of Swedish forward Roony Bardghji this summer is a prime example, where Barça paid just over €2 million for the winger, who had only one year left on his contract with Copenhagen.

Riquelme Felipe could be next. His contract with Fluminense runs until March 2026 for clubs outside of Brazil, and Barcelona are aware of the opportunity this presents.
